WAVING FROM SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS."Come down now," they'll say.
His mother had asked him to visit for dinner. What a disaster. He had left his laundry there, which means he would need to go back. Fuck...
At least it was a nice night. Well, nice enough. How did that song he liked go again? 'A beautiful night for being lonely'. That's definately what he was. Lonely. Eli didn't even have Duncan with him tonight. The dog was impressive; of everyone he had ever met, Duncan was the only one who could 1. sleep comfortably curled into a ball half his original size, and 2. sleep at all with people screaming across the house at eachother. Eli cleared his throat in a subtle way, knowing some of the disgusting sounds people could make with their vocal chords (despite being alone, with no people around to disgust). Having taken part in the screaming, he was a bit hoarse; it was a big house to shout across. Let sleeping dogs lie. That was the rule, and Eli took it into consideration when fumbling for his car keys and slamming the back door behind him.
Eli hadn't been able to deal with Dan anymore, which wasn't uncommon. Over the past few months especially, he had burned up more gas than ever before with all the drives he took after the visits. He didn't know what he would do if he wasn't staying at school. Grocery store, that had been his excuse. He had ripped the slim piece of paper from the refrigerator and stuffed it into his pocket when he went out the door. That's another thing that had changed within the past few months: the small family never seemed to run out of anything food-wise. It was because Dan got extra irritable this late at night, and the grocery store was the innocent part of this town open all hours of the day and night. The list of food was small and petty, some items impatiently underlined, meaning Dan wanted them. Those that were circled and underlined meant he really wanted them. Eli knew he was going to "accidentally" forget a lot of them.
Mainly because the grocery store wasn't the point. The grocery store was never the point. Whenever he needed to get out of the house, immidiately, he used the grocery store as a cover and took a walk under the stars. Something he never really did, considering he was a runner, and never walked when he could run, and considering that he was an only child and his mother was more than nervous about murderers and kidnappers roaming the streets. Truthfully, the city had made Eli the same way, which means it was stupid of him to be trekking through dimly-lighted forest in the middle of the night, after all, he could trekk through the well-lighted streets around Bluemoon and the Cinema just as easily. Hell, he could trekk through the grocery store. But there was something about the night air that calmed the boy.
He had taken his walk, contemplated using the one lonely cigarette he had stolen from Dan a ways back, then decided if the night wasn't enough to settle his frustration a cigarette wouldn't either, and headed back to his car. It was close to three o'clock now, and even a peaceful town like this had cops. And at the annoying age of seventeen, Eli was still subject to curfew. And so he started the car and headed away from the park (making sure he checked the backseat for any kidnappers before leaving.) With his foot firmly holding the brake pedal, the boy suddenly felt a tearing emotion close to depression. A night for being lonely, it seemed that stage had passed. He needed someone to talk to. Someone other than the stars in the sky. Maybe he would swing by Bluemoon anyways.
The boy had just pulled into the street when the car gave a grand sputter, an exceptionally ugly noise, enough of one to cause Eli to pull over in front of the school, as he knew what that sound meant. That was Noise #4. And of all the problematic noises, #4 was the worst. Kind of like someone's soul was dying, throwing up, and scratching its especially long nails across a chalkboard simultaneously. The old Skyliner looked brand new: a still-retractable white hood (rare for its age) and a sparkling cherry-red body, the car was practically Grease Lightning. Except for the engine. Much unlike the famous, powerful, street-racing greaser car, Eli's sputtered and coughed at him at the most unintelligible times. Like now, when he simply wanted to find someone else in this world, just one person. Of course, Eli could merely drive cars, fixing them wasn't anywhere near in his range of talents. The car had cost him nothing, as it was a present from Dan's grandchild-loving, richer-than-God parents, despite the fact that Eli was technically not their grandchild. Maybe that's why the car was so great but the engine was so useless: he was only an almost-grandchild to them.
Eli let out a sigh and got out of the car, there was nothing he could do other than pop the hood, stare at the mess of machinery and hope someone driving by knew their way around the inside of a car. From what he could tell, the engine wasn't letting out intimidating smoke like it did when the car made Noise #2, the most uncommon and severe of the problems, and nothing was obviously out of place like Noise #5 situations. Noise #'s 1 and 3 had something to do with a shortage of gas and oil, or so he thought. Noise #4 was the tricky one that had given him no clues. The car was so impressive, and when the engine decided it was feeling good, it showed. Now, however, it was embarrassing, he almost didn't want anyone to stop by. But that was a huge lie, he needed human contact, needed it. He refused to go to crawling back to his house and retrieve his laundry knowing the last person he would speak to was Dan.
"Awesome," Eli muttered, tolerance level shrinking. Now he needed someone for reasons other than throwing a rope down the pit of despair to drag him out. In his loneliness, the boy was stranded. Leaning against the side of his car, his eyes watched the street closely. For any sign of headlights or footsteps. Anyone who could save him one mental breakdown and an auto repair bill. At least it was a nice night. Jamie sat in her room. Humming a melody of a song that was playing in the radio. Distracted by the music, she drew on a piece of paper. When the song ended and another loud and noisy song started, she got up to turn out the radio. Then she walked over to her bed and laid down on it. Jamie felt really bored right now, there was nothing she could do at the moment. Normally she wasn´t one of this girls who always needed an event, but today she wouldn´t have minded something to do. After a moment of thinking she decided to go outside. Maybe there she could relax a bit. So she took her jackett, even if she didn´t believed she needed it. Today had been a nice day so there was probably no need for it. But then she put it on and walked through the door, closing it behind herself.
As Jamie stepped outside the academy, she shivered. The evening had come and it had become cold. After a beautifull day like this, she hadn´t expected that it was cold. Jamie pulled her jackett closer around herself. As she now walked downstairs and right into the garden. She felt all her probelms and her stress go away. As she had walked for a while through the garden and looked at the horizon. Where a beautifull sunset was to see. A peacefull smile appeared on her face. It was funny for her that she could be happy about such little things, because when she thought of all the problems that she had soemtimes, it was nearly unbelieveable to be happy about something.
When the sun was gone and the moon and the stars appeared on the sky. She sat down to the ground looking into the sky. Trying to count the stars. Finally she laughed about herself, this was crazy. Definitely she was about to go crazy. She closed her eyes and listened to the sounds of nature around her. She heared the wind whistling through the trees, a few last birds singing their songs into the night and the humming of voice from the academy. Again a smile appeared on her face. This was her home the place were she felt happy and protected from everything. Sure she missed her family but still this was her second home now where her friends were and where she felt home as well.
After a moment she got up from the ground, she wanted to go a bit away from academy suddenly. She wanted to do something funny now or at least go to Park to hang around and have some time on her own. When she reached the Park Jamie started to walk aimelessly through it. She had no idea where to go, so she just kept walking along the paths. Lost in her own thoughts, not many people were out here anymore. Even if it was a nice night, most of people in town seemed to be inside. So she walked alone through the Park.
When she heared a terrible sound she felt a shiver rush through her body. Panic was what she felt, it was one of that terrible sounds that made everyone shiver. It sounded like a car crash or another bad accident, she thought to herslef. So Jamie walked faster now. Feeling the panic in her body, if someone had got hurt they needed probably help. She checked the insides of her pockets and found what she was looking for. Her handy, there was a number for Emergencies always stored. Now Jamie had reached the streets and she started to walk towards where the noise had come from. In the pale light of the street lamps she saw a young boy standing by a car.
He didn´t seemed hurt or anything, that made her panic go away for a moment. Maybe he had just trouble woth his engine she thought to herself. Not that she herself did know something about cars, but if he just needed someone to fix it, she could help and call someone who could fix it. Jamie walked over to the boy now. As she came nearer she noticed that he seemed to be not much older or younger then herlself. Now Jamie had reahced him and asked worried then "Are you alright?" After a moment she explaint "I heared a terrible noise and thought something happened." But then Jamie said immediately "Do you need help?"

WAVING FROM SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS."Come down now," they'll say.
So, recap of this lovely situation. Eli was alone. He was devestatingly alone, and with every passing minute he felt more and more deprived of social contact. His frustration-curing walk hadn't been successful, and he was more frustrated than ever. He needed someone to talk to, someone to a. listen to his thoughts, b. get his mind off everything, or c. all of the above. He wouldn't find that at home. Oh well, things could be worse. At least he wasn't stranded by the park at three in the morning with a broken car and a mere fifteen dollars and seventy-five cents in his pockets. Oh, wait... No, it wasn't all that great of a situation to be in. Which was why Eli was surprised he didn't see or hear the approaching girl.
Really, he was just surprised in general. All he knew was the mess of the car in front of him, the empty road in his range of vision, and suddenly a voice was to be heard behind him. With a small yelp he quickly spun around to face his company, finding it was not a mugger or some other terrible being of the night, but a girl he was positive he had seen roaming the halls at his school (though he wasn't in the clear yet, the nightlife of students proved to be quite unexpected on occasion, still, Eli felt that both he and his wallet were safe from the potential wrath of the girl before him). Wide-eyed with shock, Eli shook the surprise from his mind. "Sorry..." he started, a bashful sort of smile crossing his face. "You sort of snuck up on me there..."
That's right. He was smiling now, in the middle of his misery and deprivation. Half because of common courtesy, and half because karma had compensated. He was still stranded in the middle of the night with a broken car and nearly sixteen dollars, but he wasn't alone anymore. So, step one: find someone else facing the dangers of the night. Check. What was step two? Eli had no idea, but regardless, he saw the light in the brunette's arrival. At least he wasn't alone now, waiting through the night so he could go home. Even if this wasn't by any means a conversation to help his mind escape the suffocating thoughts of home, at least he had found someone to help him with the car troubles. At least, he hoped she could, instead of leaving him stranded to sleep in his car... Eli almost wanted to ask why she was out at this ungodly hour, but he hadn't yet told her his answer.
That is a good question: what would he say? "I, um... No, I'm fine." Obviously that noise couldn't be uttered by the tongue of a human. Eli took a glance at the car from the corner of his eye. What had he done to it? He had tried to start it. "It's kind of prehistoric..." he began, knowing that he was stating the obvious. "And I say that because it sounds like a dinosaur," Eli secretly hoped she had heard some other terrible noises that emitted from some other nearby motor engine, rather than his own. But who was he kidding? Of course she was talking about his. Everyone in the general tri-state area heard it. In the middle of the forest small deer and rabbits stopped eating grass and lifted their heads to listen. "I don't think it gets any worse than it is right now." It didn't seem likely, nor did it seem possible. "But then again I haven't tried the windsheild wipers in a while." No matter his mood, Eli was always able to make a joke when a girl was present. Especially a pretty girl. That's right, he had noticed. He noticed when he wondered what sort of evil was awaiting him next time he tried to clean his windsheild.
"I'm Eli," he introduced himself, hoping that maybe this conversation would last longer if she knew his name. "You don't happen to have a functioning car and a pair of jumper cables hiding in your pocket, do you?" When the boy finally said to her "Sorry..." "You sort of snuck up on me there..." she had to laugh lightly and said then "Well then I´m sorry for scaring you." she watched his car more closely now. It seemed like the engine had given up his job. Jamie didn´t really know anything about cars, but probably she could help him in another way. She couldn´t help but think that his face was familiar, then she remebered that she had seen him a few times in school around. That was why he had seemed familiar to her, Jamie was lost in thoughts for a moment and the guy seemed as well. But she could understand after all the was stuck here with a broken engine and a car and no help.
As he answered her question "I, um... No, I'm fine." she smiled at him. "That´s great, I mean that you aren´t hurt or anything." she said to him truthfully. As he said after a moment "It's kind of prehistoric..." "And I say that because it sounds like a dinosaur," she grinned silently to herslef. He seemed to didn´t liked to be stuck in such a uncomfortable situation. So he was trying to take it with fun she thought, what was probably better then take it with anger. But Jamie herself was an optimistic person, she tried to see the good in things and she knew it was sometimes harder to do that then it seemed.
Then Eli said to her "I don't think it gets any worse than it is right now." she answered grinning "Well don´t say that in a movie it would start raining right now." "Besides the whole thing could be worse, if you would have been hurt or anything." she answered to him. After that she added "I know it´s no good saying but try to see the bright site of things." Jamie tried to help him with showing him that this all wasnt so bad and that everything could be a lot worse. So maybe he could think of something that was positiv what brought him also a solution for his problem. As hard as she tried to think of one there wasn´t anything she could do about broken engines, cause she really had no ideas of cars. Probably he needed a phone to call someone then she could have given him her cell phone but she wasn´t sure what he was about to do.
"But then again I haven't tried the windsheild wipers in a while." he said to her and she nodded laughing lightly about the joke. Then he introduced himself "I'm Eli," she smiled at him and answered him "It´s nice to meet you Eli." "By the way I´m Jamie." she introduced herself to him. As he asked her after a moment "You don't happen to have a functioning car and a pair of jumper cables hiding in your pocket, do you?" she laughed but then said really sorry. "I´m sorry to say but no."
She thought about the whole things and then asked interested "You are from Juilliard Academy as well right?" after that she said "I really don´t know but maybe they have some cables there." she suggested unsure. Then Jamie added "Otherwise I can only offer you my cell phone, that you can call help."looking at him friendly. Waiting for his reaction and for what he was going to decide.

WAVING FROM SUCH GREAT HEIGHTS."Come down now," they'll say.
The girl let out a small laugh at his surprise and apology, saying sorry herself. Ever so slightly he quirked an eyebrow. She was apologizing to him? She was nice enough to stop by and offer some help, he woke up half the neighborhood with his car and the other hald with his shock, and she was offering an apology to him? Eli began to make assumptions, as he often did when meeting someone new, about the girl's personality. Obviously she had a heart the size of a horse, with a generally optimistic nature (who else besides a double blackbelt in tae kwon do would approach someone in the middle of the night?) and perhaps a hungry social appetite. Yes, the vibes he was getting were telling him one thing: she was outgoing. Eli had to remind himself of the magic of first impressions: people gain the ability to channel every good quality they have into their first conversation. But, hey, she was optimistic, maybe he could try to be too. And seriously, could karma have sent him a better person for his situation?
The girl in front of him proved nice once again. Definately optimistic, definately kind-hearted. "That´s great, I mean that you aren´t hurt or anything." That's what she had said. It made him smile, distracting him temporarily from the looming stormcloud that was titled 'THOUGHTS ABOUT HOME'. Although her statement had been almost true. He wasn't hurt, there were no scraped knees or bruised elbows, and he was enjoying the absence of shin splints and rolled ankles for the time being. But his pride was damaged. Which may have been the worst pain of all (though Eli was not one to experiment with such things). Eli considered himself a good judge of character, he got the gist of someone within their first words, and more often than not, he was right. His pride was standing in the rain at the moment, but there was a beacon of hope like a small ray of sunlight breaking the clouds. This girl in front of him would have the spirit to pull him out of this rut.
Rain. It seemed that would be the last thing to go wrong. Unless a giant semi came by and sideswept his beautiful car, taking a sideview mirror as a souvenier. But as the boy looked up at the sky, he smiled and blocked out the remaining thoughts of dark circumstances. Already this girl was rubbing off on him. Somehow the frustration was evaporating; the calming night air had worked its magic after all. "No, you're right," he replied, to her predictable statement about looking on the bright side of things. He looked back to this evening's company. "My car may be crap and I may be stranded at three in the morning, but at least I can still see the stars." It seemed patience was the key. Whenever Eli took one of his anti-annoyance walks, the stars had never let him down, it just took a little longer than expected this time. If one were to ask Eli what his favorite part about night was, he wouldn't answer with a stupid response like 'Partying!'. Without contemplation he would flash a smile and say 'The stars.' They were an inspiration to him. If only pictures of the stars were better respected in the world of photography...
It was a complete and utter miracle that Eli had found one person attending Julliard Academy who understood what a joke was. His humor was usually hit-and-miss, but since his move from Detroit it seemed to miss-miss-miss-every so often a lucky hit-miss-miss-miss... It's like they all had a completely different perspective on humor than the rest of the world. Which was why, upon hearing the laughter follow his joke about evil windshield wipers, the boy's eyes switched their focus from the car to the girl. He quirked an eyebrow subtly, more to himself than anything. Most other people he had met would have classified him as a grade A basketcase and fled the scene, leaving Eli and his joke to comfort one another. But a genuine reaction? That was new. Eli didn't skip a beat when adding on: "Well, now that I think about it, the steering wheel is horribly territorial. I don't think it'd let anything happen to me."
The sad thing about it was the near-truth of the statement: Eli's car owned him more than it was vice versa. Over the year and a half that it had been in his posession, the car had broken down a total of fourty six times. Well, fourty seven now. That was about once every two weeks. With the sensors on the dashboard just a little bit off, the passenger side door making a funny noise when opening, and the radio collapsing on itself not once, not twice, but three times, Eli had paid quite a pretty penny to see all the inconveniences fixed. He didn't keep track, but he was sure he had paid more money than the car was worth, walked a quarter of the driven miles to get help, and nearly crashed enough times to shave a few years off of his life. It was a love-hate relationship between the boy and his car, but it was one Eli couldn't end; in this relationship, he was genuinely whipped.
It wasn't a surprise to Eli that she didn't have the necessary tools with her, nor did it surprise him that she assumed he went to Julliard. "The one and only," he responded with a smile. The girl, Jamie, seemed rational enough, giving him two options that didn't magically resolve sans an inconvenience. She even left the choice up to him. It was made easy enough: Eli had his own phone, if he had wanted to call someone he would have done so by now. There was no way he would use up Jamie's monthly minutes and make himself extremely unhappy by calling up the slightly car savvy Dan. That was a lose-lose situation for everyone. "Well, Jamie..." he started. "Looks like we're going on a hunt for cables." Jamie noticed that Eli didn´t seemed to feel completly comfortable in the whole situation. It must be difficult for him to be stranded here, with a broken engine and no cables or help. The only thing that made her wonder was that no one else seemed to have noticed it. There were only a few houses around but there was still light to see in the windows, so it made her wonder if they didn´t have heared the sound. It had been loud enough she thought to herself. But maybe they just feared to go outside at night she thought sarcastically. So Eli had to get his car fix or had to get cables from somewhere. She had really no idea where to get such cables but it seemed that he needed some of them.
The firsr image that Jamie got from Eli was that he seemed to be nice and kind of funny. What were good things but after this he seemed a bit angry about the whole situation and mostly frustrated. She could understand why he felt this way, she really did. Maybe he had wanted to go somewhere important and now was sitting here in the dark, with no help and a broken engine. Yes the whole situation must be really frustrating to him. Jamie was not sure how to help him best. But by leaving the options to him and beeing positive about things she thought was the best thing she could do right now. It was at least much better then to make him even more frustrated then he was already.
She followed his reaction and looked at the sky for a moment. It was a perfect cloudless night. There were stars and the moon shining and all seemed really peacefull. Also it wasn´t cold what was a good thing to. When Eli said to her statement "No, you're right," she smiled to herself and nodded in agreement to him. When he added after a few seconds "My car may be crap and I may be stranded at three in the morning, but at least I can still see the stars." she smiled and thought about what he had said. Then she answered to him "Yeah your right, it is a beautifull night, this evening." she looked up at the stars and the moon for a short moment again. Then added "Well I´m also positive that there will be a way to solve this problem." smiling at him and made a movement into the direction of the car as she said it.
As he added after a moment to his frist joke "Well, now that I think about it, the steering wheel is horribly territorial. I don't think it'd let anything happen to me." Jamie couldn´t help but laugh. To her Eli really seemed kind of funny. For her he had a good sense of humor. But otherwise Jamie liked to laugh, cause it was the best medicine in hopeless situations. When he answered to her question if he went to Julliard Academy "The one and only," she said grinning "Well I have to say I go there to." but to which other place, should someone her age go here. It was the best and probably only academy in the area, so it was only logical that she went there too.
After giving him the options he seemed to think about it for a moment. Then he said to her "Well,Jamie..." "Looks like we're going on a hunt for cables." she smiled and then answered him "Fine, lets go and look for cables." a walk wasn´t so bad and after all the night was really beautifull so she didn´t minded. Also it wasn´t that bad if you had interesting company. That would probably make it easier for Eli as well. She smiled and said "Then let us take a walk under the stars." She made a movement to show that she was ready to go. Then said grinning "But we should be fast, so no one back at Academy misses us, tomorrow."
